“Compulsion leads only to negative results, either directly or indirectly. This happens because any work done under compulsion does not come from the depth of our minds and hearts. We do it only to satisfy others or just to avoid getting beaten up or scolded. On the other hand, if we do work with a feeling of full self-satisfaction, i.e. with our own interests, it will show better results.

This is the basic idea behind following each child's interest in Sri Atmananda Memorial School. Here, the child is not forced to learn anything without his or her interest. Each child's interest is valued and the teachers here follow his or her interest to open up a wide range of ways to learn and teach. Based on each child's interest, the teachers try to introduce various aspects which help the children learn things without knowing that they are learning, but it goes deep in their minds and they can correlate things which makes their learning easy in the higher grades of school.”

“A good relationship with the child can be made only through knowing about his or her interests. If we know the area in which the child is more interested, we can divert his or her attention. We can introduce games related to these topics, which helps the teacher to make the atmosphere more lively and educational. Recently, I saw a boy making a train. I suggested making a railway track. We made a railway track, set up a station, made red and green flags and put up placards. He liked it and the game continued for a long time. We introduced topics such as direction (east, west, north, south), traffic rules, signals, tunnels, states of India, engines etc. By following the child's interests, we can connect almost anything to that topic.”

“In the KPM Approach to Children, each and every child and his or her interest is taken care of. The child's interest becomes the root of his or her overall development. If a young child is interested in colouring, various colours can be easily introduced, and by giving different varieties of pictures, many different topics and subjects can be introduced.”
